Preview: H&H classic car auction, Buxton, 24 July

A 1928 'Matching Numbers' W.O. Bentley 4.5 Litre (below) and No Reserve Jaguar XJ220 Prototype are to headline H&H's 24 July sale at its favoured Buxton location.

The Bentley is a sigificant addition to H&H's Buxton lot list. The car enjoyed a varied competition history until the 1980s, being seen at all the best events. And when it retired, it was extensively restored, and the car pleasingly retains its original chassis, engine crankcase, D-type gearbox and registration number. It was rebodied by James E. Pearce but retaining the Alfin brake drums from its racing days, the 'matching numbers' W.O. is estimated to fetch £400,000-470,000.

A significant part of Jaguar history, the XJ220 Prototype on offer was cited in several marque press releases as being responsible for two developmental milestones namely: 'in September 1990 Prototype 002 achieved 186mph at the Bruntingthorpe circuit. The following month the same car successfully completed 24 hour durability tests at the Millbrook proving ground'. Personally inspected by HRH Princess Diana during the official opening of JaguarSport's Bloxham facility in October 1992, the supercar was subsequently part of an aborted race programme. Recommissioned by JD Classics, the historic Prototype is being offered for sale without reserve.
