Is an older Land Rover a sensible buy?
I would like to buy a battered (but mechanically sound and roadworthy) old-style Land Rover for jaunts round the country lanes of the Gower peninsula. My impression is that Land Rovers are expensive to maintain and repair, and are also heavy on fuel, so I was wondering if you have any suggestions for something similar but more economical? I would not want to spend much more than £10,000.

They are not only expensive to maintain and repair, but enthusiasm for them also makes them expensive to buy. A Nissan Terrano II is a cheap, passable alternative but an old Land Rover is much more likely to retain its value.
